Five Myth Busters About Boomers Learning Technology

High-powered professionals crumble in tears,
Mature adults run screaming down the office hall,
Moms, dads, employees, and experts dignified by day, trembling in the privacy of their homes….

Maybe this is overly melodramatic, but you get the picture, don’t you? It is common for adults to approach me, upset, frightened, and convinced they cannot learn technology. For many people, using a new computer program or cell phone can be a cataclysmic event. Their emotions range from confusion, to frustration, to anger and can even bring about panic attack levels of stress. Do any of these descriptions sound like you or someone you know? This article breaks down several critical myths that block progress to the freedom of learning technology. Let’s explore how to harness the truth to begin a new pathway of success!

1.Technology is only for kids; there is no way I can learn it. This myth typifies the perspective of our opening illustration. Yet, recent articles indicate that Baby Boomers are dominating Facebook (ex., Business Week, 2009, Sept..7) This, and other, social media sites were wrestled from the keyboards of youngsters and are a major domain for connecting with our old friends, and promoting business endeavors. Who is on Twitter? It is widely documented that Twitter is Boomers’ regime, not adolescents’. These are just two examples of clear evidence: mass adoptions of technology and social media are being driven by adults. Ergo, they are learning it! “Move over Zoe, mommy has to get her Facebook time.” Read the rest of this entry »

Classroom Technology Can Deliver Improved Results

When it comes to classroom technology, most parents will be astounded to learn about the advances being made by their children when it comes to learning. Most people of a previous generation would have been lucky to have had a TV to watch educational programs or perhaps a projector to view videos. The advent of computers has transformed the education process but ever since computers were introduced to schools, the advance of technology has continued at great speed. This has led to the situation with interactive whiteboard and pupils being able to direct items on a screen from their seat. Learning has never been more engaging for a child and to be honest, it has probably never been more fun.

Some people may think that school is not all about fun and that children need to learn but it should be possible to learn while having fun. This can greatly help the learning process as children will learn more when they feel engaged with a subject. Everyone can recall lessons where they felt bored but they probably cannot remember much about what was actually supposed to have been learned in that class. Read the rest of this entry »

Is Modern Technology Good For Your Business?   no comments

Is Modern Technology Good For Your Business?
ses, at least to some degree, but is technology good for your business, or your health?

Nowadays technology influences our lives and businesses in many different and subtle ways.

We’re so used to using it that it’s easy to forget that ten years ago most of it wasn’t even invented.

You might use DVDs, Podcasts or the Internet for your learning material. You’ll probably use spreadsheets to track different aspects of your business and word processors to write documentation.

Then there’s email, social networking (Twitter, Facebook, etc) and of course the flat screen monitor you’re probably reading this on.

All good stuff you might be thinking and it sure makes your life easier, right?

Yes I agree, until it goes wrong and it goes wrong a lot, all the time, but why?

Are You Fighting Bad Technology Too?

I’ve been involved in the software industry for around 20 years now and I’ve been using the internet since the early 1990s, well before most people knew it existed. I consider myself reasonably tech savvy as a result.

I think that most (but not all) people will agree that technology has transformed our lives, usually for the better.

However, the reason I’m writing this post at all is because I still think it performs badly. I’ll give you some examples as to why, going back no more than the last two days. Read the rest of this entry »

Computer technology just like other technologies has developed overtime and has also influenced our lives in different ways.  The research in human-computers interaction has been very successful and has influenced the computing system all over the world.  When we compare the evolution of computer technology and the several inventions that has taken place, it is evident that this industry is growing very fast and at a very high speed. This has been attributed to different challenges that have been faced by the players in this industry.  Information technology often shortens as IT is the common term that is commonly used to refer to the entire computer industry. It involves the use computers and software in the to mange information. However different companies use different terms to mean computer technology with some companies using terms like management information systems.

The history of information technology is very interesting. This can be traced from the time when a department of information technology used a single computer operator especially for data storage to the modern time with complex communication between computers across the world. For business people, this has altered the business field in which the business field has been level and most businesses and customers are able to communicate freely despite time and location (Schwabach 2006 p87). Technology public relations firms have to accentuate the positive aspects of technology

Today’s technological achievements truly are astounding. The things that we can do with great ease today would have confounded and perplexed previous generations. It would have been quite a shock for a denizen of the Middle Ages or from Feudal Japan to walk into a modern day electronics store. More than likely, these individuals would stand mouths agape at the twinkling wonders that seem sound bountiful. They would have a hard time comprehending many of the devices’ purposes, let alone know how to use it. It is sobering however, to think that a few hundred years time, future generations will think that way about the current generation. They will view whatever future wonders lie ahead, such as teleportation, commercial space travel, time travel, or perhaps jetpacks, as commonplace and would have a hard time thinking about how they would live without them. But that is neither here nor there, as all that is pertinent is that in this day and age, technological advancements are happening on a daily basis and are quite astounding.

Technology Bashing and Altruistic Business   no comments

Technology Bashing and Altruistic Business

This is not to say the class is usually boring; this is to say the class discussions show me how wrong everyone is. For example last night the class discussion concerned the second half of Mark Twain’s A Connecticut Yankee at King Arthur’s Court. The first interesting point of the conversation was when the some members in the class, but mostly the professor, bashed modern technology.

Now to point out the fallacies in identifying technology as the bane of the earth scourging the well being of man kind. This is just simply not the case. I will admit many people do not appear to truly understand why technology, or anything is created. The favorite argument is that new technologies are invented to better humanity. Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong. New technologies are invented because an individual wanted to create it. Every technology is born from the selfish desire to create it. No man created something he did not want to create. One could argue that some inventions are created with bettering humanity in mind. This is true, but the person with that in mind would not have created it if he hated doing everything he needed to do to create. For example I am going to make up a fictional disease called relativtitis. Finding a cure for relativtitis would certainly benefit humanity. According to Dr. Paquin W. Stevens, he is trying to find the cure for relativtitis to help humanity; however, Dr. Paquin W. Stevens enjoys chemistry, science, and whatever else one needs to work with and know to find the cure for relativtitis. If Dr. Paquin W. Stevens loathed every element of science he would not be trying to find the cure for relativtitis. Since Dr. Paquin W. Stevens enjoys working to find a cure for relativtitis the cure is born from selfishness. Read the rest of this entry »

Informatica Corporation is the world’s number one independent provider of data integration software   no comments

Posted at 7:07 pm in Bussines,Internet,Technology

In a never-ending growth of technology, there co-exists an infinite growth in data along with the growth of its complexity and diversity.  During these times, it becomes imperative to understand how data technologies, solutions, and services function so that you can have a greater handle over your enterprise data.  A technology you should be aware of is data virtualization.  It is widely discussed because it allows for data from multiple sources, regardless of its complexity or diversity, to be compiled in a single database allowing easy and efficient access.  In essence, data virtualization is an evolution of data warehouses.  Besides the flexibility of data virtualization, there are a variety of other reasons that make this service so attractive.  It allows agility in responding to constantly changing business conditions, allowing for a faster developmental pace for new and differentiated products.  It makes customer acquisition and retention a breeze as customer data becomes more easily available, and significant reductions in overhead costs.

Because data virtualization can make or break your business, it is crucial that you choose the right technology from the right vendor.  There are many vendors that try to sell you products without knowing exactly themselves what the products do.  In this post, we cover the most commonly made mistakes when determining which data virtualization software to choose.  The first mistake you can make is purchasing a data federation product that has been disguised to serve data virtualization purposes.  Data virtualization and data federation are two completely different services and your business could potentially lose a ton more data if you do not realize this difference.  The second mistake is assuming that all existing data is clean and ready to be virtualized.  Not all data is created equal and you need to find a data virtualization vendor who is aware of this fact, or you’ll end up with a bigger mess than you started with.  Finally, make sure that the vendor you choose sells a data virtualization service that supports ETL-like transformations.  This is very important because as data becomes more complex and their formatting methods become more intricate, you need to find a vendor who will design a data virtualization solution tailored specifically for your business.  Data virtualization is not a one product solves all service.  It needs to be specifically tailored for each individual client, based on the pre-existing data in order to fully assist in optimizing your business data.  If you’re able to recall these mistakes when determining your data virtualization vendor, you will be glad that you took the time and effort to understand the technology before rushing into a purchase.  Careful planning now will save you from a massive headache later on down the road.
